The Science Society is taking two new directions this year. The first direction we are going to take is to become citizen scientists! Citizen science is scientific research conducted, in whole or in part, by amateur or non-professional scientists. Students will sign up and participate for a variety of actual science experiments being conducted by actual scientists and science organizations around the world.
The second direction we are going to take is to care for our new Field Lab. Check it out here! Students will maintain and expand on the new field lab by adding QR Codes for visitors to explore the organisms there, as well as create stations and activities for visitors to do.
The Science Society meets every Thursday afternoon after school at 2 pm until 3 pm in class 237. All students need a
permission slip before attending, which will be updated in September. Only serious students who are interested in being involved in actual science need apply.
Sign up, download the phone app, and join in on the observations and help us collect data!
New this year! The Leadership Team
A select few of the 7th grade students who participated the year before will be chosen in the 8th grade to be on the Leadership Team. The Leadership Team will meet Thursday mornings at 6:40 am until 7:25 am. These students will decide the activities and the direction of the Field Lab. These students will also help create opportunities for the Science Society to be more actively involved in Citizen Science activities around the world. To be eligible, students needed to have been actively involved in the Science Society in the 7th grade, shown leadership skills and creative problem solving abilities. These students are also in good academic and behavioral standing by their teachers.
A few things we have done this year:
Creating and Using platforms to
turn your smartphone into a microscope.
Growing Salt, Sugar, and espom salt
crystals in petri dishes.
Playing with Tumblewings.
A 3D Hologram from a smartphone in action.
